MasterCast 1-2-1 Clear Epoxy Artwork Coating Resin.
Used in art applications, especially when pigmenting and thin layer casting  (one layer: 0.5mm to max 5mm thick).
Non-toxic, two-component polymer resin that produces an optically clear, high gloss finish. Certified ASTM D-4236.
A kit includes the Resin+Hardener.

Mastercast 1-2-1 clear epoxy resin systems for artwork. Certified Non-Toxic ASTM D – 4236. Read cautions on individual containers carefully. The excellent clarity and transparency makes the resin system particularly suitable for the protection and decoration of art work.

1 Ensured by UV stabilizers, Blockers and Inhibitors. The products contain UV absorbers and HALS (Hindered Amine Light Stabilisers) and makes use of Cyclo-Aliphatic technology.

Mastercast is odour-free with no solvent content, BPA or Nonylphenol. It is classified low flammability. Please be advised although our resins are U.V stabilised this does not mean they are U.V. proof. Ultimately all our clear epoxy resins will show signs  of U.V. degradation over time. The manufacturers Eli-Chem work constantly to improve U.V. protection, however resins are plastics and over time the sun will always win that battle.

Always wear gloves as it does contain chemicals and may cause allergic skin reactions in some people. Eye protection is also recommended.

Please note this resin has a heat distortion temperature of 45-50°C which makes it unsuitable for the placement of very hot objects on its surface such as cups, mugs, plates etc. We recommend UltraCast xt  for excellent temperature resistance.

When resin is fully cured, it is safe for incidental contact with food, but not recommended for food preparation (e.g. cooking, cutting). Refer to Food Safety notes.

Eli Chem carbon neutral

  1. MasterCast 1-2-1 resin and hardener are mixed 1:1 by volume. Mixing ratio must be accurately measured, otherwise the resin may not dry/set properly. Pour the two components into a suitable mixing cup.
  2. Only mix the amount needed, within the pot life ( processing time). Calculate the volume required or use Resin Calculator.
  3. Stir the measured quantity in the mixing cup slowly and thoroughly for 3-5 minutes. Use a broad spatula and scrape the sides and bottom of the cup as you stir. The mixture will heat up as it starts to react.
  4. You now have 25-30 minutes (at 22 °C) to use the resin before it becomes too thick, as it gels and hardens.
    At this stage the resin can be poured into separate cups and colour pigments, pastes or tints added.
  5. Your substrate (canvas/board) must be dust-free, degreased, flat and level.
    Pour the mixture or separate coloured mixtures onto the substrate. Resin is self-levelling and spreads by itself on a smooth, flat surface, although you can use a spatula to spread it.
    The resin can also be applied by brush or roller. Your work surface should be covered as and resin run-off or splatter will harden on it.
  6. MasterCast 1-2-1 contains air release agents to minimize bubble formation. Small mixing bubbles can be removed with the heat of a blowtorch or heatgun. Pass heat slowly and gradually over the resin surface in swivelling motion at a distance of 30 cm above the resin surface. Do not overheat a single spot and closer may risk creating ripples and dimples.
  7. Protect the work from dust or other foreign objects by working in an environment that is as dust-free as possible. Cover the work when finished.
  8. Curing time is 6–8 hours at 22 °C. Clean the cured surface with a damp cloth.
  9. All mixing containers and tools can cleaned with acetone or cellulose thinners.

IMPORTANT HEALTH & SAFETY

Although these expoxy resins are formulated for safe use, it is important to be proactive in safety measures.

    • Read cautions on individual containers carefully.
    • Wear disposable gloves when working with resin. Protect your hands throughout the whole process of measuring, mixing and application, as it may cause an allergic skin reaction in some people.
    • We recommend that you wear a breathing mask when using excessive heat as a technique to create visual effects. This is especially important if you are working with materials such as fine pigments, pastes, spraypaint, solvents or alcohol inks.
    • Work in well ventilated room.
    • Wear respirator if sanding the cured resin product.
    • Do not eat, drink or smoke while working with resin and pigments.
  • Mix ratio by volume: 1:1 resin to hardener
    by weight: 1:0.9 resin to hardener
  • Viscosity (mixed): 4.400–4.700 mPa.s* at 23°C (considered to be medium)
  • Pot Life (practical working time) 15-20 minutes at 23°C (250g mixed mass) / 10-12 minutes at 25°C
  • Heat resistance after curing process: up to 45–50 °C
  • Thickness (1 layer): up to 5 mm (max. 2 kg in one pour)
  • Gel time (at 23 °C): 250g mixed resin = 25-30 min | 5mm casting = 55-60mm | 2mm coating = 65-70min
  • Curing time: 6–8 hours at 22 °C, touch dry in 4-5 hours, full cure in 5-7 days
    Thin casts less than 5mm may only be hard after at least 5 days e.g. bookmarkers.
  • No VOCs (Volatile Organic Compounds) : yes
  • Contains UV-protection: Absorber + HALS : yes; good UV-protection
  • Shelf life: one year in sealed containers
